Starting today, I would like to introduce English idioms
related to "work" along with meaning and example sentences. For the first session,
I hope you can read these expressions and read them.
1. Burning the midnight oil - working late into the night
Example: "I have a deadline tomorrow, so I'll be burning the midnight oil tonight to finish the project."
2. Pulling your weight - doing your fair share of work
Example: "I don't think Sarah is pulling her weight on this project. She needs to contribute more."
3. Jumping through hoops - completing difficult or complex tasks
Example: "The application process for this job is quite challenging. You have to jump through a lot of hoops to get hired."
4. Going the extra mile - putting in extra effort or doing more than expected
Example: "Our team received great feedback from the client because we went the extra mile to deliver a high-quality product."
5. Cutting corners - taking shortcuts or doing something in a quicker, easier, and often less ethical way
Example: "I know the deadline is tight, but we can't afford to cut corners on this project. We need to ensure everything is done properly."

6. Keeping your nose to the grindstone - working hard and consistently
Example:
"I haven't had much time to relax lately because I've been keeping my nose to the grindstone
to meet our project deadline."
7. Climbing the corporate ladder - advancing in your career or moving up in a company
Example: "John started as an entry-level employee, but he's been climbing the corporate ladder and now he's a senior manager."
8. Playing hardball - being tough or aggressive in negotiations or business dealings
Example: "The company is playing hardball with us during the contract negotiation.
We need to be prepared to push back."
9. Being a team player - being cooperative and supportive of others in a group or team
Example: "In this job, it's important to be a team player and work collaboratively with others to achieve our goals."
10. Putting in the hours - working long hours to get the job done
Example: "The project deadline is coming up, so I'll be putting in the hours to make sure we finish on time."
11. Keeping your eye on the ball - staying focused on the task at hand
Example: "We need to keep our eye on the ball and make sure we meet the project deadline."
12. Rolling up your sleeves - preparing to work hard and get your hands dirty
Example: "I know this project is going to be tough, but I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work."
13. Learning the ropes - becoming familiar with a new job or task
Example: "I'm still learning the ropes in my new role, but I'm excited to take on new challenges and grow in my career."
14. Taking the bull by the horns - taking charge of a difficult situation
Example: "The project was falling behind schedule, so I decided to take the bull by the horns and lead the team in a new direction."
15. Working like a dog - working extremely hard
Example: "I've been working like a dog lately to meet our project deadlines, but it's worth it to see the results."
16. Hitting the ground running - starting a new job or project with enthusiasm and energy
Example: "I'm excited to start my new job and hit the ground running to make a positive impact on the team."
17. Putting your best foot forward - doing your best and making a good impression
Example: "We have an important client meeting today, so let's make sure we put our best foot forward
and show them what we're capable of."
18. Running around like a headless chicken - being busy but disorganized or not achieving much
Example: "We need to be more efficient with our time and stop running around like headless chickens, or we'll never get this project done."
19. Keeping your head above water - managing to cope with a difficult or stressful situation
Example: "The workload has been overwhelming lately, but I'm managing to keep my head above water and get things done."
20. Pushing the envelope - taking risks or trying new approaches
Example: "Our team has been pushing the envelope on this project by experimenting with new technology and creative ideas."
